THE SHROVETIDE DEVIL

Documentary

Portugal - 2024
Documentary directed by Diogo Varela Silva

The Shrovetide Devil is a film about one of the most genuine and ancient carnival celebrations in Portugal, the Entrudo de Lazarim, which explores the fascinating Caretos and their elaborate costumes, not only as a window onto the carnival festivities, but also as a reflection on gender dynamics and the perpetuation of ancestral customs, passed down between generations in an ancient Portuguese village. The documentary highlights how rituals and traditions are kept alive and passed down from generation to generation, offering an intimate and rich perspective on social and cultural transformations over time.
